Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa today launched a royalty payment scheme organized by the state-run Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation for the music artists.
President Rajapaksa presenting royalties to a large number of artists including lyricists, singers, and composers, stressed the importance of conserving the old songs by veteran artists for the benefit of the future generation.
Under an initiative of the President, a gazette notification was issued on the 5th of January this year to provide royalties for singers according to the intellectual property law.
The President has also instructed officials to set up a separate unit under the Ministry of Media and Information to take legal measures against altering original songs.
Many artistes including Dr. Pandit W.D. Amaradeva and Rohana Weerasinghe received royalty payments. Minister of Media and Information Keheliya Rambukwella, Secretary to the Ministry W.B. Ganegala, President's Chief of Staff Gamini Senarath and chairman of the SLBC Hudson Samarasinghe were also present at the occasion.
